Artistic Direction THINK BIG! Festival
Dear audience,
Without art, a life shared with each other in democracy is inconceivable. Live art in the form of dance, music, and theatre is particularly powerful at connecting people and bringing them together. They inspire our idea of a world, where every individual belongs and enjoys the respect that comes with that belonging. These art forms create an open space for anyone to interact with each other in ways that are free from fear and full of imagination as well as mutual trust. As creators in the arts, we consider it an essential mission to give children the opportunity to experience this in their earliest years and to further support their growth in their youth.
This is the spirit in which we welcome you to the 10th edition of Think Big! Our festival is proud to celebrate its big anniversary!
This year‘s motif of the kaleidoscope represents the multifaceted outlook that has been our guiding star right from the beginning.
Think Big! has been presenting international and local companies since 2011 with their exceptional dance, music, and theatre productions with and for young people. The audience is invited to many locations in our city to encounter a variety of artistic formats: There are performances on the stages of the Schauburg and the Münchener Kammerspiele, the Muffathalle, the HochX, the schwere reiter, at schools, and also outdoors at the Marienplatz, the Elisabethplatz, and in front of Fat Cat. A supporting program invites international artists, dance producers, and dance educators to an exchange of ideas and to joint research already from 4th July onwards. Lectures, discussions, and workshops focus on “dance from the beginning” and on methods in community dance. There is a dedicated information day for teachers regarding dance workshops for young people. For nine days in July, Think Big! will bring people together, will surprise, inspire, and enthuse them.
Our festival meeting point at the Elisabethplatz directly opposite the Schauburg will enable fresh encounters between artists and the audience. A music program will complement the guest performances there, together with an upcycling station, and hospitality provided under trees and the open sky.
Join us to celebrate together!
With warmest regards,
Simone Schulte-Aladağ & Andrea Gronemeyer

Dear audience,
The time has come! The tenth iteration of THINK BIG!, the international dance, music theatre, and performance festival for a young audience is about to start. I really need to congratulate the team to this anniversary edition, which also is its most comprehensive iteration so far: Artists from around the world show their work in the Schauburg and schwere reiter, in HochX and at the Münchener Kammerspiele, at Mufathalle, at Fat Cat, in schools, and very spectacularly this year in the open air, too. THINK BIG! reaches new heights with over 30 events, which follow several seminar days for knowledge exchange and networking.
Together, Simone Schulte-Aladağ and Andrea Gronemeyer have invited international dance and theatre companies that focus on the needs of children and youngsters in terms of aesthetics, content, and space. This time, the festival pays extra attention to the very little ones.
THINK BIG! employs play and art of the highest levels of sophistication to attract the audience of the future: Cultural education on this level gives young people power, it educates them, it promotes integration and dialogue. We need and want more of that, please! The festival is backed by the capital of Bavaria, the City of Munich: We appreciate the value of this investment into tomorrow‘s audience!
I wish you, dear audience of any age, a festival experience that will move and inspire you!
